Changes in the Czech toll system from 1st March 2024

From the beginning of March, new changes in the Czech toll system will take effect. These changes include adjustments to toll rates, the implementation of a CO₂ emission classes and a revision of the categorisation of vehicles powered by electricity or hydrogen, which will affect their exemption from toll payment.

Implementation of a CO₂ emission classes

The implementation of European legislation has led to the introduction of 5 CO₂ emission classes in the Czech toll system. The highest charges are set for CO₂ emission class 1, which is estimated to include more than 90 % of vehicles. The lowest charges are for CO₂ 5, which is for emission-free vehicles.

Toll Rates

The new toll rates consist of 4 components: a road charge, an air pollution charge (EURO standards), a traffic-based noise pollution charge and a CO₂ emissions charge. The change in rates will take place in two phases. The first rates will be valid only in the period 1-24 March 2024. The final rates will be valid from 25th March 2024. Example: for EURO IV (CO2 class 1), the final toll rate represents a roughly 12% increase, i.e. approx. 0.64 CZK/km.

Revision of the categorisation of vehicles powered by electricity or hydrogen

Vehicles powered by electricity or hydrogen with a weight of more than 4.25 tonnes will no longer be exempt from charging. They will now have to pay road and traffic noise charges, with zero charges for air pollution and CO₂. Vehicles must be standard registered and equipped with an on-board unit.
