HVO100 and others: How alternative fuels reduce our carbon footprint

The demands on modern logistics are constantly increasing - it must not only be efficient, but also sustainable. In the Czech Republic, Ewals Cargo Care has long been looking for ways to reconcile these two priorities. Alternative fuels open up new possibilities in this area. They are a dynamically developing area and we want to explore their potential to the full. As a result, we were able to reduce emissions by around 261 tonnes of CO₂e last year.

Alternative fuels: The path to reducing emissions

These savings are the result of using diesel blended with HVO, HVO100, LNG and BioLNG. The largest share of our refuelling so far has been HVO-blended diesel, which was one of the first options available in the Czech Republic to start reducing emissions via HVO. In 2024, we added HVO100 to our portfolio, which has also started to become available here thanks to expanding infrastructure. It currently appears to be our best option as it offers significant CO₂ reductions, is fully compatible with modern diesel engines and does not require investment in new technology, unlike LNG or electric trailers.

HVO (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil) - Hydrogenated vegetable oil is a biofuel produced from used vegetable oils or animal fats. It can reduce emissions by up to 90 % compared to traditional diesel.
LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) - LNG is liquefied natural gas that is stored at very low temperatures. Emission savings with this fuel can be up to 20 %.
BioLNG (Liquefied Natural Gas from Biological Origin) - Liquefied biomethane is produced from organic material such as waste from the food or agricultural industry. Depending on the production method and the source of feedstock, it can deliver emission savings of up to 80 - 100 %.

Our long-term goal is to gradually increase the share of alternative fuels and reduce our carbon footprint even further. We are keeping an eye on technological developments and are ready to implement further innovations that are not only more environmentally friendly but also economically sustainable in the long term.
