How did you get into truck driving?
I got into driving completely by accident, through a customer at an authorized car service center where he came to order a service. He told me he was a truck driver, and I asked if I could ride along. Well, one thing led to another, and slowly I made my way to driving at Ewals.
Do you remember your first day behind the wheel?
My first drive was at night, between Česká Lípa and Bezděčín, and I was transporting foam for seats. I turned around about three times that night and had a lot of respect for it because it was my first time sitting in a truck alone. But in the end, I managed it, and now I've been doing this job for five years.
What do you find most difficult about your job?
The hardest thing is probably realizing the scale of it and the fact that you have to think for other drivers too, so that no problems arise.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
It's my hobby, my childhood dream, and what I enjoy most about it are the views from my "office" here. Both sunrises and sunsets.
Do you prefer long or short routes?
Shorter routes suit me better because I have a family, so it's more convenient for me. But I don't mind longer routes either.
How do you deal with tiredness and stress behind the wheel?
There isn't much stress here, but I usually deal with tiredness by eating something salty. Or I play Czech songs, which I sing along to, and that wakes me up. Otherwise, the best thing to do when you're tired is just to stop and stretch for a while.
How often do you have to check or service the truck?
The truck and the entire rig are checked on an ongoing basis. When we load/unload, we check to see if anything is damaged. Otherwise, the truck is serviced by an authorized service center at regular intervals.
What should every driver know besides how to drive?
Every driver should use common sense, think, and be considerate of others on the road.
How do you manage to balance work and family life?
Thanks to Ewals offering me the opportunity to be at home every day, I manage very well.
How do you see the future of the driving profession?
I don't think I need to worry about my job in the nearest future.
