Road tax changes in Europe


Road tolls in the UK, Germany, Belgium and Bulgaria will soon go up. We bring you a basic overview of the increase. 
 
Belgium  
Starting 1st July 2023, new tariffs apply for Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia. 

 

Bulgaria 
Also, from the 1st July 2023, new toll rates will apply in Bulgaria. Rates have increased by around 50% per kilometre. 




Great Britain 
From 1st August 2023, a revised HGV levy will be applicable for HGVs over 12,000 kg on motorways or 'A' roads in the UK. The exact amount of the fee depends on the weight of the vehicle, the emission class and the time spent in the UK. 



Hungary 
Starting the 1st October 2023, new toll rates will be introduced in Hungary. 



Germany 
As part of the environmental protection programme (Klimaschutzprogramm 2030), the German government has announced significant changes to the toll for all trucks, trucks and commercial vehicles with a permissible weight of 7.5 tonnes and above. These amendments entered into force on 1 December 2023. These changes aim to reduce carbon emissions and promote long-term sustainability.   
  • The new toll rates include a CO2 charge. Vehicles will now be classified in CO2 emission classes, which are not the same as conventional emission classes.  
  • The toll for five-axis EURO VI trains over 18 tonnes increases from €0.19/km to €0.35/km. 
  • LNG and CNG vehicles, which are exempt from tolls until the end of 2023, will be charged as diesel trucks from 1 January 2024. They will be in the same category as EURO VI. 
  • Hydrogen and electric vehicles will be exempt from tolls by the end of 2025
